Driving directions

Olbia / Palau direct route

This is what Google Maps will recommend.

Route directions in Sardinia are not consistent.

In Olbia you may see directions for “Costa Smeralda”, “Palau”, “Porto Cervo”, “Arzachena”.

Once you are outside Olbia follow directions for Arzachena and then Palau.

Gas stations where you can generally find the cheapest gas are highlighted. Total Erg is often the most convenient.

Olbia / Palau coastal route

This is the recommended route.

Admire Costa Smeralda with sightseeing extending from Cala di Volpe to Porto Rotondo.

Shorter mountain range.

Just north of Olbia there is a roundabout where you need to follow directions for “Porto Cervo” and not “Arzachena”.

Then follow directions for San Pantaleo (just stay on the main road).

After San Pantaleo look for Arzachena and then Palau. To get it in Goole Maps add an intermediate stop in San Pantaleo.

If interested you can drop by Vigne Surrau (winery) to buy or ty some local wines.

Alghero /Palau: route suggested by Google Maps

These are tortuous roads especially around and past Tempo Pausania.

Not recommended.

Alghero /Palau: suggested route

Despite some roadwork this is the most direct road.

Follow directions for Olbia. When you are almost in Olbia follow directions to Arzachena / Palau, you will be directed to the bypass.

Then take the direct or coastal road to Palau as explained earlier.

Alghero /Palau: touristic route

Best road to to admire the rugged and dramatic coastline and visit

before getting to Palau.

The road is tortuous and it will probably take you ~ 5 hours if you stop a few times.

The sightseeing is worthwhile – just check internet pictures of Castelsardo and the other villages.
